 Singer-songwriter
Roger Bryant grew up on the banks of the Guyandotte River in Logan
County, W.Va., heir to a rich musical heritage and in love with
the history of the region.
For years, friends
and family have been urging Roger to put some of his beautiful original
songs and arrangements on a disc. At last, his On
the Banks of Old Guyan is available.
The Guyandotte
River meanders through southern West Virginia and is steeped in
mountain history and culture. In this project, Roger tells much
of the history of the region in song.
One of the album's
highlights is "The Vixen Of Stratton Street," inspired
by the book, The Secret Life and Brutal Death of Mamie Thurman,
by F. Keith Davis. Enjoy a dozen unique songs by Roger Bryant -
with a touch of bluegrass, country, and 100% Appalachian Mountain
music.
Many long-time
West Virginia music lovers will remember Roger as a young man appearing
on stage with his famous grandmother, "Aunt Jennie" Wilson.
Virginia Myrtle Wilson was born in 1900 near Henlawson in Logan
County. She learned banjo and ballad singing from the many talented
family members and other musicians in her coalfield community. She
was among the first women in her region to play the banjo. Strong-willed
and articulate, Aunt Jennie became a folk legend in her later years
and had a festival named in her honor. She passed away in 1992.
The name of Roger's first album in 25 years is taken from one of
Aunt Jenny's best songs.
