 Joe
Dobbs was born in Mississippi and grew up listening to his grandfather
play the fiddle. Joe took up the instrument himself when still a
child.
He moved his
family to West Virginia in 1967. Joe has been involved in the Mountain
State's folk music scene for the past 30 years as a fiddler, recording
artist, instructor and lecturer.
The Hurricane,
W.Va., resident also is well known to the entire state as the popular
host of West Virginia Public Radio's weekly "Music From the
Mountains" show, which airs every Friday night. He also established
"Fret 'n' Fiddle" in St. Albans, W.Va., one of the state's
best known music stores.
In addition
to performing at festivals and universities in the United States
and Canada, Joe has travelled extensively with his music. His travels
include tours of Africa, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Europe
performing Appalachian Traditional Folk Music.
In addition
to being a stand-out solo performer, Joe also is a founding member
of The 1937 Flood, which bills itself as
"West Virginia's most eclectic string band."
