 Nearly
200 years of combined musical experience is at the heart of Gandydancer,
a group formed in 1996 to deliver traditional mountain music in
a memorable way.
"Gandydancer?
What the heck is that?" the Old Time Herald Magazine asked
editorially. "Around
the turn of the century, the word meant a railroad worker
Today, it means five of WV's finest musicians, each well known for
his individual talent, now combined to make a whole that is greater
than the sum of its parts. This is a versatile band of multi instrumentalists,
wit many deep connections to traditional sources, doing a wide range
of material."
The five --
Dave Bing on fiddle, banjo and mandolin,
Jim Martin on bass, Gerry Milnes on fiddle, Ron Mullenex on banjo
and Mark Payne on guitar -- use a fresh assortment of instruments
and vocal combinations that audiences find appealing. A capella
vocal harmonies, twisty old-time fiddle and banjo tunes, seldom
heard West Virginia folk songs, traditional bluegrass, new compositions,
poignant ballads, and driving instrumental numbers are all presented
masterfully.
Individually
they have a wealth of performance experience on stage, television,
radio, film, soundtracks, production of films and recordings, as
well as workshops, and classes on the music. In addition to serving
as judges at competitions, all have authored articles, monographs,
books and papers on various related subjects.
