 Born
in Bluefield, W.Va., in 1928, fiddler Frank George has taken Appalachian
music around the world.
An authority
on the history of West Virginia traditional music, Frank is particularly
interested in the Irish and Scottish roots of mountain culture.
In addition to the fiddle, he plays the Scottish bagpipes, the pennywhistle,
the fife, the mountain and the hammered dulcimer, and the old-time
banjo.
Over the years,
he has frequently performed Celtic music with Poteen, a high-energy
band got its start in 1978. The Georges tutored the group in old-time
and the Celtic traditions in the music of West Virginia. After traveling
to Ireland to expand their understanding of Celtic music, the band
began to describe their music as "Appal-Irish" in recognition
of the blending of cultural and musical influences that shape their
sound.
Frank also performs
as a solo artist, frequently partners with banjo player David
O'Dell and played in the late, great Cedar
Point String Band back in the 1980s.
Frank George
lives in Roane County with his wife, dancer Jane George.
