Strange Creek Fiddling 1947
John Johnson
These
23 John Johnson tracks were selected from
80 sides recorded by Professor Louis Chappell, the famed West Virginia
University folklorist, over a concentrated two-day session in August
1947 using a homemade aluminium-disc recording machine. This CD
makes part of that session available to the public for the first
time.
Some
selections here ("Sally Ann," "Wagoner") and
classics, some are samples of the West Virginia repertoire ("Shelvin'
Rock," "Camp Chase") and some are fairly unknown
tunes ("Brickyard Joe"), all preserved when a great, original
stylist was in his prime.
