 One
cannot separate The Bing Brothers from the roots of old-time music.
In fact, they may have grown their own tree.
Reviews of their
first album, "Just For the Sake of It,"
include: "
excellent
recording
groups like the Bing Brothers
will safely
carry the old-time string band tradition into the next century."
(Bluegrass Unlimited, May 1994). And "
good, solid old-time string band music, delivered with skill, energy
and obvious love of tradition," Sing Out, Vol 39, #1.
The Bing Brothers
are Dave on fiddle and vocals, Mike
on mandolin and vocals, and Tim on
banjo and vocals, with Danny Arthur
on guitar and vocals and Greg Gibson
on bass. They first learned their craft as teenagers, listening
to old-time music at the family "chicken roasts," and
later were influenced by Sherman, Burl and Maggie Hammons, Clark
Kessinger, Kenny and George Steel, Glen Smith, Frank
George and Boo Boo Ramey.
Mainstays of
Appalachian concert stages for nearly 20 years, the Bings have also
appeared on PBS television and radio, the BBC program "Country
Time" and recently completed a concert tour of the British
Isles.
